2016 Annual Juried Exhibition

My fine art print Winter Birch has been selected for the Annual Juried Exhibition at the Moncton Gallery. It will be exhibited, along with works from other local artists, from 4 July to 31 August 2016. The gallery is located on the main floor of City Hall, 655 Main Street, Moncton, NB. This is the sixth time one of my works has been selected for the Annual Juried Exhibition. I'm pleased to state that, although I haven't entered every year, all of my previous submissions were chosen for the exhibition. A copy of the 2014 entry, Anchor, was purchased by the City of Moncton and now resides in their Collection of Fine Arts.

2016 Art on Paper Awards

My fine art print Spring Torment Blue has been selected as one of the finalists for the 2016 Nonesuch Art on Paper Awards. To-date, my work has only been exhibited in Moncton, on a limited basis, via the Moncton Gallery's Annual Juried Exhibition. Thus, selection for this group exhibition will provide gallery exposure in Nova Scotia and Québec. I'm also hopeful it will introduce my work to collectors and curators in both of those provinces and, potentially, both nationally and internationally.

The Nonesuch Art on Paper Awards are "international awards to recognize, to exhibit and to reward the accomplishments of Contemporary Artist's work on or with paper". Selected finalists are included in two group exhibitions: Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, from 20 August to 10 September 2016; and, Montréal, Québec, from 30 September to 14 October 2016. A number of awards, including residencies and cash prizes, are also available. The Parrsboro exhibition will be shown at the Main & Station gallery, 168 Main Street, with a vernissage at 3:00 pm, 20 August 2016. The Montréal exhibition will be at 141 Ann Street, Montreal.

All submissions to the 2016 Nonesuch Art on Paper Awards (not just the finalists) may be viewed in the online Catalogue of Entries.

Arts Grant Award

I am the recipient of a 2015 Creation "C" grant from the New Brunswick Arts Board. The "C" category of grants is:

"for emerging artists who are striving to achieve a professional level in their discipline and who can demonstrate their commitment to the development of specialized skills or knowledge in their discipline as well as their commitment to the achievement of a professional level in their discipline through training, mentorship or peer recognition, and who are producing a growing repertoire or body of work".

My goals for the project are to:

...further develop and hone a unique and personal artistic vision, which emphasizes a minimalist and fine art approach to landscape photography. I seek to: represent typical vistas in atypical ways; capture alternate perspectives of iconic views; isolate and emphasize smaller elements within a scene; and, reduce scenes to forms, patterns or colours. When possible, I prefer multiple visits to ensure I can photograph my subjects in the desired combinations of light, weather and season, or to capture them in varying conditions, thereby demonstrating an evolution of subject and the fluidity of a static medium. I would like to end the project with approximately 20 minimalist and/or fine art landscape photographs consisting of two to four series of 5 to 10 images each, one of which will result from my artistic residency in June. In the long term, this project will help to: provide a stronger direction for my larger body of work; expand my portfolio both generally and through the creation of multiple series; and, promote greater interest in my work. The bulk of the work is expected to take place between April and October 2015.

Chicoutimi Saguéneens Hockey

A media assignment from QMi Agency to capture action shots during two QMJHL playoff games between the hometown Moncton Wildcats and the visiting Chicoutimi Saguéneens. The emphasis was on Chicoutimi as images were being supplied for Québec-based, not local, media services. The assignment involved two matches - games one and two of the first-round series - held in Moncton on 26 March and 29 March. Moncton won the opener 4-2, and Chicoutimi took the second 3-2. Moncton won the next three games, all played in Chicoutimi, to eliminate the Saguéneens.

Canada 150

I was contracted by QMi Agency, on behalf of Heritage Canada, to provide editorial photographs from two Canada 150 Roundtables held in Moncton, NB, on 22 March 2014. My role was to obtain candid photographs of the roundtable hosts and participants during the actual sessions. The Canada 150 Roundtables are a cross-country consultation process between Heritage Canada and local and regional community leaders. The purpose is to seek local input and ideas regarding the celebrations for Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017. Two roundtables were held in Moncton, a morning session with the theme "Minorities and Languages," and an afternoon session with a "General" theme. The roundtables were chaired by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Heritage and Official Languages, Mr. Robert Goguen, Member of Parliament for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe, and Mr. Paul Landry, Executive Director, Atlantic Region, Heritage Canada.

AUS Womens Hockey Championships

Photographic assignment for the Université de Moncton to capture the post-victory celebrations of the Aigles Bleues should they win the 2014 Atlantic University Sport Women's Hockey Championship. The university was seeking additional on-ice coverage with an emphasis on candid moments amongst the players. I was present for all three games of the best-of-three series, and also shot general action during each game. The Aigles Bleues won the first game at home by a score of 2-1, Mount Allison took the second game, in overtime, in Sackville by a score of 3-2, and Moncton won the third game, and the championship banner, at home with a shutout victory of 2-0.
